Levantines are non-Muslim minorities that concentrated in Istanbul and major port cities during the Ottoman period, especially after the Tanzimat period, and engaged in trade. XVII. XIX century. Levantines played an important role in İzmir's being an important trade center and the development of trade life until the 19th century. Levantines started to come to Izmir 200 years ago. The families that came were generally English, French and Italian. They came for the carpet, fig, grape and cotton trade. Later, they developed the industry. Levantines were western according to the Ottomans and eastern according to the Europeans. They set out from Western Europe and settled in the Levant, that is, in the east. That is why they were called levantine, meaning eastern. Levantine families in Izmir lived in Bornova (Bournabat), Karşıyaka (Cordelio) and Buca (Boudja). For this reason, houses reflecting the characteristics of English, French and Italian architecture were built in these regions. These houses were big and magnificent houses according to that time. It was in large gardens.
