Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that examines the conditions, diseases of the soft (gum) and hard tissues (alveolar bone) surrounding the tooth, and the treatment of these diseases.

Periodontal disease begins as gingivitis. The gums lose their healthy appearance, become bleeding and edematous. If not intervened early, this inflammation progresses and spreads to the surrounding tissues; priorities lead to gingival recession and later loss of the alveolar bone surrounding the tooth. Teeth begin to shake, teeth are lost without any reason such as caries, pain, etc.

The primary cause of gum disease is bacterial plaque. In order to remove the bacterial plaque, teeth should be properly brushed twice a day and dental floss should be used. Routine dentist control and if necessary, dental calculus cleaning (detertrage) should be done every six months.
